Description: This digital story features the Australian South Sea Islander community of Kanaka Town, near Rockhampton in Queensland. Kanaka Town is situated on the north side of Rockhampton, between Leamington, Pine, Simpson, Balaclava, Ford and Creek Street. In the late 1800s, this area was populated by South Sea Islanders and it became known by its present name.
