Description:
On March 9, 1961, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 9.

This mission was a test flight of the Vostok spacecraft, which would later carry the first cosmonauts into space. Inside the spacecraft was a mannequin named Ivan Ivanovich, a dog named Chernushka, dozens of mice, some reptiles, and the first-ever guinea pig to fly to space. The dummy and his gang of animals launched on a Vostok-K carrier rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. All the animals made it back to Earth unharmed after completing one orbit around the Earth. Ivan Ivanovich was ejected from the capsule during reentry and landed with his own parachute.

On March 12, 2015, NASA launched four satellites on a mission to study a weird phenomenon in Earth's magnetic field called magnetic reconnection.

When Earth gets bombarded with plasma from the sun, our planet's magnetic field lines can break apart and reconnect. This releases huge bursts of energy in Earth's magnetic environment and can funnel charged particles into the atmosphere, creating pretty auroras. But exactly how and why magnetic reconnection happens is a bit of a mystery. To figure out exactly what's going on, NASA launched the Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission. The mission's four identical spacecraft fly in a pyramid shape called a tetrahedral formation, which allows the mission to observe these reconnection events in three dimensions. One year since the mission launched, it made the first direct detection of magnetic reconnection.

On March 15, 1806, a meteorite fell from the sky near the town of Alais, France.

Known as the Alais meteorite, this was the first object from space in which scientists discovered organic chemicals. The space rock was classified as a group CI carbonaceous chondrite and is the oldest known meteorite of its kind. Carbonaceous chondrites are extremely rare. They account for less than 5 percent of all meteorites discovered on Earth. Their chemical composition resembles the chemistry of the sun more closely than any other kind of meteorite, so they're considered the most primitive type of space rock. A Swedish chemist named Jons Jacob Berzelius analyzed a sample of the Alais meteorite and found that it contained water, clay minerals and complex carbon compounds.

On March 13, 1781, Sir William Herschel discovered Uranus, the seventh planet from the sun.

Before Herschel discovered Uranus, other astronomers had seen it before, but no one realized it was planet. Instead, they thought it was a star. Herschel actually thought he was looking at a comet. Because it was moving, he figured it couldn't have been a star. Herschel and other astronomers spent two years debating about whether it was a comet or a planet. In 1783, Herschel finally announced that Uranus was, in fact, a planet. But Uranus didn't receive its name until 1850. Herschel wanted to name it George's Star after King George III, but astronomers outside of England weren't cool with that. Ultimately, the German astronomer Johann Bode named it Uranus after the ancient Greek god of the sky. While the international astronomy community liked that name better than George's Star, the planet was hereby destined to forever be the butt of all solar system jokes.

On March 11, 2008, the first Japanese module of the International Space Station launched on the space shuttle Endeavour during mission STS-123.

Nicknamed Kibo, the Japanese Experiment Module is the largest single module on the entire space station. Its main component is about the size of a tour bus, so they couldn't launch the whole thing all at once. The remaining parts were launched later on STS-124 and STS-127. Along with the seven astronauts, STS-123 also carried a special Canadian robot to the space station. The Special Purpose Dextrous Manipulator, also known as Dextre, is a huge two-armed robot that conducts repairs outside of the space station. This reduces the need for astronauts to take risky spacewalks to do the repairs themselves.
